PA Senate Committee To Hold Hearing On Cash Gift Ban

HARRISBURG – A public hearing will be held in the coming weeks to examine legislation that would ban cash gifts to legislators. The PA Senate State Government Committee, chaired by Lancaster County Sen. Lloyd Smucker, will focus on the gift ban bill he is proposing, laws in other states, other reform plans that have been introduced in the legislature, and additional proposals that have been suggested by advocacy groups and individuals. Smucker plans to introduce legislation and a new Senate Rule to implement an absolute ban on legislators accepting cash gifts from lobbyists, principals, consultants, and others who seek to influence the legislative process. Smucker stressed that the hearing is intended to pave the way for prompt action on reform legislation that will begin the process of restoring the public’s trust in the General Assembly.
