ALLENTOWN – PPL Electric is helping the communities it serves weather the arctic start to 2014 by pledging $250,000 to its Operation HELP fund and $50,000 to be shared among various food banks. Dana Ferber, PPL’s regional operations director for the Harrisburg and Lancaster areas, said we know the need for Operation HELP will increase because of the wintry weather and helping food banks can help families stretch their budgets. In the Harrisburg and Lancaster regions, food bank donations will go to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and Channels Food Rescue, both in Harrisburg, and the Power Pack Project in Lancaster. The newly announced funding will augment the current $1.45 million that goes to Operation HELP which provides emergency financial aid to pay heating bills for families with financial hardships. PPL also reported electric demand for January was the highest ever monthly total for the utility at 4.3 billion kilowatt-hours. The January demand was nearly 8% above the average for January in the previous five years.
