Bill Waives Tolls For Emergency Responders

/ WDAC

HARRISBURG – Legislation that would waive turnpike tolls for law enforcement and emergency responders is in position for a state Senate floor vote this fall. Senate Bill 249, sponsored by Westmoreland County Sen. Kim Ward, would require the PA Turnpike Commission to waive tolls for emergency vehicles when either directly responding to an emergency or participating in the escort of a fallen emergency responder, law enforcement officer or armed service member. Senate Transportation Committee Chairman, Sen. John Rafferty of Berks & Chester Counties said the legislation is aimed at providing consistency and and processing efficiency when it comes to ensure that tolls are not a concern for law enforcement or other emergency responders in these types of situations. The committee has approved the measure. A similar bill was also approved by the committee in the prior legislative session, but did not reach the governor’s desk.
