States Eye PA’s Clergy Probe As Court Battle Looms

/ WDAC

HARRISBURG (AP) – Pennsylvania’s grand jury report on child sexual abuse in Roman Catholic dioceses is drawing attention from prosecutors elsewhere. Meanwhile, a court battle looms that could curtail such investigative reports in the future. PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro said more than 15 state attorneys general and a Justice Department official have contacted him about his office’s two-year investigation. Shapiro says their questions revolve around how the Commonwealth conducted its investigation and specific people named in the report who ended up in their jurisdiction. New York and New Jersey launched new investigations into the church’s handling of clergy sex abuse allegations last Thursday. Several other states announced actions, too. On Sept. 26, the PA Supreme Court will hear arguments by lawyers who say grand jury reports should not name people who are not charged.
