PA Game Officials Probe Deer Deaths

/ WDAC

READING – Dozens of dead deer are being reported in northern Chester and southern Berks Counties. Game wardens are taking samples of the deceased deer to submit for lab testing. Although EHD is suspected, the Game Commission has not yet received confirmation of an EHD outbreak in the area. EHD is an often-fatal disease caused by a virus affecting white-tailed deer and is contracted through the bite of insects called “biting midges.” While EHD is not infectious to humans, deer displaying symptoms of EHD are not suitable for consumption. As a precaution, all hunters should wear rubber or latex gloves when handling or field-dressing any animal, and wash their hands and tools thoroughly after field dressing. Residents in the two affected counties are encouraged to call the Southeast Region office in Reading at 610-926-3136 to report dead, sick or injured deer.
