PA Human Services Secretary Participates In SNAP Challenge

/ WDAC

HARRISBURG – PA Department of Human Services Secretary Teresa Miller says now through September 28, she will take the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP Challenge to highlight Hunger Action Month, the importance of food access, and the prevalence of food insecurity across Pennsylvania. Miller explained that the challenge is impactful because of the decisions lawmakers make look good on paper but don’t take an account of the people that have to make use of the money they receive the best they can. She said she had $80 to spend for her, her husband, and daughter for a week’s worth of groceries using the amount given for a family of 3 on the SNAP program. She said it was hard to make those dollars stretch and had to be very careful of the decisions she made. Her family of 3 normally spends up to $300 per week on groceries. SNAP is a 100% federally funded program which helps nearly two million Pennsylvanians.  Older adults, persons with disabilities, and children are some of the biggest beneficiaries of the SNAP program.
