Qualifying Seniors For In-Home Care

/ WDAC

HARRISBURG – The PA Senate voted to approve Senate Bill 912, which allows senior citizens to quickly qualify for at-home care covered by Medicaid. The bill would create “deemed eligibility” for in-home care and allow those 65 and older, who are applying for Medicaid and would be “presumed eligible” for nursing home services to also be “presumed eligible” for in-home care. Sen. Michele Brooks of Erie, Crawford, & Mercer Counties is the bill’s prime sponsor. She said that her bill was needed due to stringent and outdated Medicaid rules. Not only does the at-home setting improve quality of life, but it saves tax dollars. The Commonwealth saves an estimated $34,000 a year for every person who is served in the home instead of in a long-term care facility. The bill now goes to the state House for consideration.
