Name Change Proposed For Columbus Day

/ WDAC

HARRISBURG – A Philadelphia lawmaker says he is introducing legislation to officially change the name of Columbus Day. The proposal from Rep. Chris Rabb would remove statutory reference to Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, recognized on the second Monday in October. In addition, it would direct the governor to issue an annual proclamation celebrating the cultures of indigenous people and drawing attention to the exploitation of native populations. Rabb said, “Our history tends to glorify the conquerors who initiated devastation rather than indigenous victims. It’s long past due to set the record straight and restore centuries of injustice. Rabb pointed out that Minnesota, Vermont, Alaska, and South Dakota have made the change, along with nearly 60 cities across the nation. With today being the Columbus Day holiday, federal, state, and county government offices are closed, along with most schools and banks. There will also be no home mail delivery today.
