Prisons Say Changes After Guards Fell Ill Have Cut Smuggling

/ WDAC

CAMP HILL (AP) – Pennsylvania prison officials say they are seeing positive results from changes to mail and visiting policies imposed after dozens of corrections officers and other employees had to seek medical help for suspected exposure to synthetic marijuana. The agency says cases of suspected staff exposure have plummeted in the month since new policies were announced. Drug overdoses among prisoners have fallen and investigators believe illicit drugs have become scarcer. The price of drug contraband has jumped, suggesting the supply is lower. There’s also been a recent increase in visitors caught trying to smuggle in drugs, which officials believe is the result of changes in mail handling. Ohio prisons have also been taking measures to stem employee exposure to contraband drugs but correction officers are demanding they do more.
